Laundry Organization for Small Spaces

We have been enjoying our in-home washer and dryer for six months now! But the change in laundry habits provided some organizing challenges.

First of all, we were using a large laundry basket on wheels to collect our dirty clothes and linens throughout the week and then transport them to the basement laundry room each weekend. Our new washer and dryer are smaller than the commercial ones in the basement, so it really didn’t make sense to collect everything in one large basket.

I wanted to be able to separate items throughout the week — my fine washables, the rest of my clothes, my husband’s clothes, the linens — and in the same space that held my current laundry basket. This would also enable us to do smaller washes as needed rather than doing all the laundry on one day.

I was excited to find the Removable Laundry Basket, made by Rebrilliant. It consists of three separate laundry baskets supported by a frame on wheels. It allows me to do my sorting and also to carry each separate basket over to the washer. You can buy it from Wayfair here.

My second organizing challenge was figuring out how to use the space above the stacked washer and dryer. I considered having a shelf installed by my contractor. But I’m on the petite side, and I would have to use a stepstool to reach anything on a shelf. I decided to use the top of the dryer (which I can reach) for stuff I need to use frequently, but to add some helper shelves for the laundry products that would be used less frequently.

Once again, I turned to Wayfair and found the Astria Adjustable Helper Shelf, also made by Rebrilliant. Because it is adjustable, I could customize it to the width of my dryer. It can also be used below a kitchen or bathroom sink. You can find it on Wayfair here.

Before I discovered Rebrilliant’s Removable Laundry Basket on Wayfair, I found another product that fascinated me. It’s the Multi-Purpose Collapsible Basket, which I purchased on-line from Home Depot. (I tried buying it in the store but it is only available on-line here.) You can see it in the photo above. It’s the flat gray thing on the left. Yes, that is how skinny it collapses! Below is what it looks like expanded. It’s great for carrying the dry laundry from the dryer to the folding table.

Having the right organizing solutions in place has made having my own washer and dryer setup that much more rewarding!
