Get Cash for Your Clothes

In my 13+ years as a Professional Organizer, I’ve noticed that everyone likes to get new clothes, but most people don’t want to get rid of old clothes. So I’m happy to say that if your clothes are in good condition, you might be able to get money for them.

If you are a fan of designer labels but find that you don’t wear some of your high-end clothes, consider reaching out to The RealReal. They call themselves “the nation’s premier luxury consignment retailer, having sold over 9 million individual luxury items since launching in 2011.” If you have ten or more items, they will even come to your home. You can see their list of accepted designers on their website. You can also read their FAQs for consignors.

The RealReal accepts more than just clothing. Consider consigning any of these items:

  • Women’s, men’s, and even children’s designer clothing, regardless of size or season
  • Furniture, art, and home decor – even that old sterling silver set in the pantry!
  • Jewelry, from costume to fine to unbranded pieces
  • High-end handbags, shoes, and accessories.

What if your clothes are not luxury brands? Don’t worry — there is a consignor for you, too! ThredUp is the place to contact for the rest of your clothes and accessories. They carry gently used clothing from over 35,000 different brands. Request a Clean Out Kit and they’ll send you a huge bag in which you can send back (for free) the clothes you no longer wear. You can earn some cash or shopping credit. Check out their accepted brands here. And here are the FAQs.

Regardless of whether your clothes are on the high end or the low, I hope this has given you some incentive to move your unloved clothing out of your life and into someone else’s!
