Disposing of Your Unwanted Medications

Two pieces of good news to help you dispose of medications that have expired or that you no longer need.

First of all, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is coming up on April 29 all over the U.S. from 10 am to 2 pm. Sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA),  National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and medications.

To find a drop-off location near you, visit this website: National Take Back Initiative Collection Site Search.

Second, I’m happy to report that you don’t have to wait until the next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to dispose of your unwanted medications. You can search for locations that will accept your medications all year round by going to this page: Controlled Substance Public Disposal Locations.

Now, go clean out your medicine cabinet!

Scratch out all personal information on the prescription label of your empty pill bottle or empty medicine packaging to make it unreadable, then dispose of the container.
