Helping Hands

Don’t you sometimes wish you had an extra set of hands?  Or could be in two places at once?  Or had paid more attention in shop class?

A bunch of companies have sprung up to provide a helper or two when you need it.

Handy (formerly Handybook) connects  you with home cleaners and handymen who are “experienced, friendly, background-checked, and insured.”  There are 20 categories of services, the most popular being furniture assembly, interior painting, light fixtures, moving help, faucets, and home cleaning.   You specify the job, get a price, and manage the booking and payment via Handy.  They offer a money-back guarantee.

TaskRabbit also matches you up with full-vetted, background-checked helpers in many categories.   Specify what you want and when, and you get a list of individuals to choose from.  You can see how much they charge per hour, as well as their reviews by other customers.  Their “how it works” page explains the process.

Fiverr (pronounced fiver) has a different spin on hiring service providers.  All services cost $5.  Each provider tells you what you will get for $5, as well as the cost of additional services.  The list of services you can get for $5, as well as the expertise of the providers, is really impressive.

There are some other sites that provide similar services, so if none of these speak to you, go ahead and look for reviews on others.
