Spring Recycling Events

In 1842, Tennyson wrote, “In the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” Were Tennyson writing today, he would have to change that from “love” to “recycling”, based on the number of spring recycling events going on!

New York City residents recently received a mailing from the NYC Department of Sanitation announcing upcoming “NYC SAFE Disposal Events” in all five boroughs. SAFE stands for Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, and Electronics. The events are intended to “provide NYC residents with a one-stop method to get rid of potentially harmful household products.” For more information about dates, locations, and what types of products are accepted, see their web site.

The Lower East Side Ecology Center is once again sponsoring e-waste recycling events to collect working and non-working electronics from households, not-for-profits, and small businesses.  Events are taking place all over the city in April and May.  The dates and locations are listed here, and a list of items accepted is listed here.

Upper Green Side is sponsoring “Recycle-O-Rama: Aprez Tax Edition” on Saturday, April 28th from 10 am – 3 pm at St. Catherine’s Park, First Avenue between 67th and 68th.   They’ll be collecting electronics and clothes, and offering paper shredding on the spot.  In addition, they’ll be having e-waste collection events on both April 30th (82nd Street Greenmarket) and June 26th (92nd Street Greenmarket).  They’ll also be collecting paper, eyewear, fabric and other recyclable items.  See their web site for details.

So get that spring cleaning started, and be sure to bring your unwanted items to one of these great events.
